Kaliya was a dreaded poisonous Serpant who used to live on the banks of Ramanaka Dwipa. He was driven away from there by the fear of Garuda. Kaliya chose the banks of river Yamuna near Vrindavan as his home. Kaliya was so venomous that the waters of Yamnuna nadi bubbled with his poison and turned black.
One Day Krishna and his friends were playing along the banks of river Yamuna where Kaliya used to reside. Suddenly the ball landed in the water.
Krishna climbs the nearby tree and jumps into the river. Meanwhile Kaliya attacked Krishna. Kaliya filled the water with his venom. Then the Anantha Swamy Krishna was wrapped around by Kaliya and dragged deep into the river. Seeing this, the villagers all gathered around the bank. Hearing the cries of the people gathered around, Krishna grew so huge in size that Kaliya had to release him. Krishna grabbed the tail of the serpent and dragged him to the river surface. Krishna assumed the weight of whole universe and started playing his flute and dancing on the serpent's head. Seeing Kaliya vomiting venom and blood, his wives came to Krishna begging for his life.
Its a Bhagyam to be able to see this miraculous event. With Krishna's dance his anklets, bracelets started making divine tunes. To see this Devatas gathered around.
There was shower of flowers during this miraculous event. Later Kaliya begged for forgiveness and understanding the power of this small boy, he asked for his anugraham.
Gopals,Gopikas, Animals, Birds, Devatas all are enjoying this spectacular event.Post this Kaliya goes away with his family to Ramana Dwipa. Garuda did not harm him because of anugraham of Sri Krishna. This kalinga krishna bronze statue is made in a Chola style.
